Protecting Families against HIV/AIDS (PREFA) is a national Non Governmental Organisation (NGO) that was formed in June 2004 with a mission to assist Uganda to enhance access to quality HIV/AIDS prevention, care, treatment and support to families with emphasis on Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission (PMTCT) of HIV as the entry point to these services.     With Uganda’s population of nearly 33 million that was growing at the rate of 3.4% per annum, this would have translated into approximately 22,000 babies being born infected with the HIV virus per year if there was no prevention of mother to child transmission intervention.
